UEFA European Championship stats

This is an overview of statistics from UEFA European Championship (EURO) during its history, qualifications excluded. Since only four team participated in the first fifth editions (1960-1976), these tournaments are partly neglected.

The statistics (still growing) includes competition victories, finals and goal average and penalty shoot-outs.

In addition, Belgium, Czechoslovakia (2), England, Hungary and Netherlands have won bronze. Since 1984, no match of third place game have been played.

Goal average

EURO 1980 is the first edition that included a group stage. The statistical facts included both matches in the group stage and the knockout phase. Note that goals in penalty shoot-out are excluded (which may make the numbers different from what is presented in other sources):

1980: 1.9 goals (8 teams participated)
1984: 2.1 goals (8 teams participated; a note: the average in the group phase was 2.6, the high number resulted from four matches with five goals: 5-0, 5-0, 3-2, 3-2)
1988: 2.3 goals (15 matches, 8 teams participated)
1992: 2.1 goals (15 matches, 8 teams participated)
1996: 2.1 goals (31 matches, 16 teams participated)
2000: 2.7 goals (31 matches, 16 teams participated; a note: the high number resulted partly from one match with seven goals: 6-1)
2004: 2.5 goals (31 matches, 16 teams participated; a note: the high number resulted partly from two matches with five and six goals respectively: 5-0, 2-4)
2008: 2.5 goals (31 matches, 16 teams participated; a note: the high number resulted partly from four matches with five goals: 3-2, 4-1, 4-1, 3-2)
2012: 2.5 goals (31 matches, 16 teams participated; a note: the high number resulted partly from five matches with four goals or more: 4-1, 2-3, 4-0, 4-2, 4-0)

The biggest margin of victory is five goals, which have happened four times (France-Belgium 5-0, 1984; Denmark-Yugoslavia 5-0, 1984; Netherlands-Yugoslavia 6-1, 2000; Sweden-Bulgaria 5-0, 2004).

Results

The most common result in European Championship (qualifications excluded) is 1-0, which reflect stats considering results in football overall. The most common results in the competition following 1-0 are 2-1, 2-0, 1-1, 0-0 and 3-0.

Notice: these facts include historical EURO competitions through 2016.

Final

The finals normally include fewer goals than the tournament average. Most goals occurred when Spain defeated Italy 4-0 in the EURO 2012. The numbers of goals per match are for full time (extra time and penalty shoot-outs not included).

The total average for the final (full time, 90 minutes) in the competition is 1.9 goals.

Penalty shoot-outs

Penalty shoot-out are possible and relatively common in the knockout stage. In the 1996 edition it happened on four occasions, which is a record. The last, and only, tournament without a penalty shoot-out (since it was introduced in Euro 1976) was in the 1988.

Qualification and Euro finals performance connection

How much connection can be found from the performance in qualification and in the final tournament? The data below is from the 2016 tournament.

Among the four teams in the semi-finals, two had won their groups in the qualifications. One of the these teams was France, that as the host nation didn't participate in the qualifications.
